Boat-breaking businesses proposed

Two local companies are looking to build boat demolition facilities on the waterfront.
The Coastal Restoration Society came before city council in October, pitching a state-of-the-art, self-contained boat recycling facility targetting derelict boats and recreational vessels.
This week Canadian Maritime Engineering owner and president Tony Kennedy asked council to support a ship disposal and recycling facility for navy, coast guard ships and ferries that have to be decomissioned in Canada.
“We’ve currently bid on a number of vessels that would be recycled in Port Alberni,” he said. “The attraction there is the larger facility, deep water access, protected port and good access to the main market to remove the recycle product.”
Both organizations said the high-profile environmental issues with a ship breaking company in Union Bay would not be replicated here.
