Water restrictions being lifted across majority of central Island

NANAIMO — Officials to re-evaluated water restrictions across the region due to a series of recent storms.

Effective Friday, Nov. 1, the Regional District of Nanaimo will lift all restrictions for its water service areas, with exception of Decourcey and Surfside regions, which will remain at stage four “due to operational needs”.

A release from the RDN states “recent significant rain events through the month of October had relieved drought conditions and reduced the seasonal water demand in our communities.”

It also noted stream flows have returned to normal after peaking earlier in the month due to heavy rains.

The move from the Regional District comes shortly after the City of Parksville removed its own watering restrictions, which went to level four in late September.

Despite the removal of restrictions come Friday, water conservation is still encouraged.

“Conserving water, however, is an important, year-round habit as drought conditions are coming earlier and lasting longer than in the past. Increasing our water efficiency helps build drought-resilience over the long term.”

An interactive map of current water restrictions across the region is available on the RDN’s website.
