NANAIMO — The Clippers had a 3-6 record in October but there’s optimism their most recent victory can give the team some traction.

Nanaimo won 4-3 on Saturday, Oct. 26 over the Chilliwack Chiefs, and displayed grit and resolve even with a short bench.

Veteran Chase Hull scored in game and believes in could signal the start of a turnaround.

“It meant a lot. We definitely needed that, it was good for the room. Everybody is definitely feeling a lot better because we were on a loosing streak there but now we’ve broken out of it. We changed things up in our D zone and our neutral zone and made a few tweaks.”

In the previous two games the Clippers built up leads of three and four goals versus Coquitlam and Chilliwack only to let them slip away.

Hull felt the team was performing well in the first period, but couldn’t carry the momentum through.

“But we were really bad in the second and third against Coquitlam. We’re just focused on being better in the later points in games. We need to prepare and make sure we’re locked down on our systems but there’s no point in being too flustered about who we’re playing.”

Newcomer Carson Lesiuk played his first two games with team over the weekend after being acquired from Penticton.

He felt embracing small details made big impact in the Chilliwack win.

“The guys really dug in and I think we really came together. We need to play a full 60 minutes. It was a full group effort all the way down the line up. Guys were blocking shots, taking hits to get pucks out and burying chances. I think we turned the page in the right direction and we have to keep that going.”

Defenceman Braydan Smith also played his first two games with the team after coming from the Victoria Grizzlies.

He knew the of the team’s recent results and was pleased he could play a role in changing the outcome.

“It’s something teams struggle with all over but I think that second game was a must win. It seemed like that in the room. Everybody pulled together and we stuck to our systems.”

Clippers highlights from games Oct. 25 and 26 versus Coquitlam and Chilliwack.

The Clippers have the exact same opponents in their next games on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2.

This time the games are in Coquitlam and Chilliwack.
