SAN Group faces curtailments

Local SAN Group mills are facing temporary curtailments over the next few weeks, blaming a lack of logs.
VP of Operations Kevin Somerville says it’s an industry-wide issue like he’s never seen before.
“The industry right now is certainly in flux. In my 35 year career I don’t think I’ve seen it this tight for fibre,” he said. “From an Alberni / West Coast standpoint the valley’s a pittance of what it once was and some of us still operating in the forestry and manufacturing sector here locally are still trying to make a go of it and hopefully there’s a brighter future ahead.”
Somerville says their two sawmills are on day-to-day operations, while their reman facility will be shutdown for at least two weeks to allow inventory to rebuild.
SAN Group employs 250 people in their Port Alberni and Langley mills.
