Nanaimo NightOwls head coach steps down

NANAIMO — A fresh voice will lead the West Coast League’s Nanaimo NightOwls next season.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15 the team announced head coach Greg Frady elected to step down from the role he held for all three seasons the NightOwls have been in existence.

In a statement, the 61-year-old Frady said it was an honour helping to launch a new team and that he had three great years in the Harbour City.

“I had envisioned being with the team for many years because I truly loved the Nanaimo people. However, I feel it is best to step down at this time. I wish everyone all the best for a successful future,” Frady stated.

The NightOwls are expected to announce Frady’s replacement shortly.

While the NightOwls were a sub .500 team under Frady’s watch and failed to qualify for the WCL playoffs, the Owls fielded an entertaining product in all three campaigns.

The Owls compiled a record of 74-88 during Frady’s time with the team, who’s a veteran US college and international coach originally hailing from Georgia.

Nanaimo went 26-28 in the 2024 WCL campaign, finishing just outside the playoff bar at fifth place in the North Division standings.

NightOwls managing partner Jim Swanson said the classy way Frady interacted with the community, players and coaches will never be forgotten.

“…he set a professional tone for the NightOwls and was respected by the players and people around the league. We have been blessed to have someone I consider a close friend as our head coach.”

The NightOwls play in the 17-member WCL, a summer wooden bat 54-game regular season involving collegiate players spanning between late May and early August.

Teams are located in B.C. and Alberta, as well as Washington and Oregon states.

Nanaimo plays its home games at historic Serauxmen Stadium.
