PARKSVILLE — A local man is facing a second degree murder charge in connection to the death of a woman two years ago.

Oceanside RCMP say 52-year-old James Allen Griffiths was arrested on Friday, Oct. 4 and charged with the murder of his mother, 78-year-old Donna Webster, at a Parksville home in November 2022.

Griffiths appeared in court briefly the day after his arrest and will appear again on Oct. 15 on a procedural matter. He remains in custody.

Few details about the nature of Webster’s death are available and RCMP say they will not comment further as the matter is before the courts.

Griffiths’ criminal history is extensive, dating back to the early 2010’s.

He’s had prior convictions, including jail time, on theft, fraud and assault charges.

At the time of the alleged killing, Griffiths was in the midst of court proceedings from an alleged assault with a weapon and robbery in Parksville in March 2024.

Future court dates on those charges are scheduled for early 2025.

Much of Griffiths’ criminal history occurred in the Lower Mainland up until around 2017, when appearances in Nanaimo court became more common due to offences primarily in the Oceanside area.
