Significant mixed-use development coming to Lantzville’s village core

LANTZVILLE — Excitement levels were palpable around the District of Lantzville’s council table as a pending new addition to the village core was enthusiastically endorsed.

Representatives from Lantzville-based McNaught Contracting detailed their plans for 7181 Lantzville Rd. across from Caillet Rd., signifying a notable pending addition to the downtown area.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11 a development permit was unanimously approved for the three-storey development with 12 residential units on the top two floors and three ground-floor commercial spaces.

Mayor Mark Swain was highly complementary of the development dubbed Coastline Station to be built on the .65-acre site.

“Who else are we going to hand this stuff off to? This is the best-case scenario as a community we could ever hope for. We have people who live here, want to build here and are committed to building a quality project,” Swain said.

The developer envisions the downtown commercial space, amounting to 6,700 sq/ft, to include a coffee shop/bakery.

Architect Chris Chung said the project is heavily guided by the local developer, who’s heavily invested in creating a development to fit in with Lantzville’s small-town atmosphere.

Chung notes the development, to include an outdoor public gathering area, is designed to be used by the public year-round.

“…it’s meant for people to gather, it’s meant for people to come, it’s meant for everybody to enjoy it’s a space that we’re giving back to the community.”

Chung added the project represents an important addition to one of the entrances to the community.

“With a building such as this we will mark the start of what is considered the most critical point of your town, which is the city’s commercial corridor,” Chung said.

Councillors also endorsed a variance to reduce the number of short-term parking and bicycle parking areas.

More than 50 surface parking spots are proposed, including 21 short term spaces.

Coastline Station aligns with existing District of Lantzville zoning regulations and the Official Community Plan.

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.

Chung told the meeting that a building permit could be awarded within two weeks.
