A New Wheaton Hyundai in Nanaimo

Jul 23, 2024 | 9:15 AM

The Wheaton Group purchased Nanaimo’s Hyundai five years ago, and ever since they’ve been planning to move into a bigger, more advanced location.

Hyundai Canada had expressed an interest for a new facility for their franchise in Nanaimo, and they found the old building didn’t meet their needs or customer expectations.

That old building, at the corner of Wellington Rd. and Jingle Pot Rd., left a lot to be desired despite its visible location. There wasn’t enough office space, and some of the service equipment was out of date.

Now, those plans have resulted in the new Wheaton Hyundai building at 2355 Kenworth Road. This state-of-the-art facility features a larger service department, with more service bays, including a drive-thru service bay.

And they now have the latest equipment that can diagnose any vehicle issue, even tire wear.

Jay McLeod, sales manager at Wheaton Hyundai, is very pleased with the new building, and how it makes customers feel.

“It’s a really nice, comfortable place to buy a car,” MacLeod said.

He emphasized how Wheaton’s approach is to help customers buy a vehicle, rather than selling them a vehicle. It’s a subtle distinction demonstrated by Wheaton’s commitment to Upfront Pricing, Market-based Pricing, and Openbook Appraisals.

Upfront Pricing means giving the customer the total cost, then breaking it down.

This is the opposite of what most car dealers do, which is offer the MSRP, then add destination, fees, taxes, and any other necessary charges, all of which can feel like a bait-and-switch.

By offering the total price first, Wheaton Hyundai makes customers feel like they’re not being cheated.

With Market-based Pricing, Wheaton Hyundai scans the marketplace to see how much other dealerships are charging for the same, or similar, vehicles, then adjusting their prices to between 5 per cent and 7 per cent below them.

It gives the customer a fair deal while keeping prices competitive with the rest of the market.

For evaluating trade-in value, Wheaton uses Openbook Appraisal.

They use their own data, plus data from Canadian Black Book and various auction websites to come up with an offer that fits the market price of that vehicle.

Because of Wheaton Hyundai’s commitment to customer satisfaction, they’ve been named a Platinum Certified Hyundai Dealership.

This is a very prestigious honour, as they’re the only dealership with that designation on Vancouver Island, and one of just four in western Canada. Combine that commitment with their new facility, and for years to come, Wheaton Hyundai’s can be trusted to provide the mid-Island with Hyundai quality and Wheaton service.
