Dover Bay Ultimate frisbee team scores their way to provincial tournament

NANAIMO — The Ultimate team from Dover Bay capped off a strong season with a trip to provincials in Kamloops.

Dover had a 15th place showing at the 3A tournament at the end of May and were recognized by winning the Spirit of the Game award.

Coach Shane Pfeifer said the squad came in to the event with three goals in mind.

“Our team went into the tournament as the bottom seed so our goals were to not place last, not get shutout in any games, and to win the spirit award (best sportsmanship as voted on by opponents). We achieved all 3 goals.”

The students went 6-0 in their league in March and April and also appeared in several tournaments, highlighted by a third place showing at the AAA Island Championships.

“The difference between the good teams and the great teams are in the fine details. Throughout the season our team learned it’s the small mistakes that the best teams capitalize on to blow a game wide open. It was a fantastic learning experience for our returning players and a great way to celebrate the hard work put in by our graduating athletes.”

Pfeifer is also the president of the Nanaimo Ultimate Association, so even though the high school season is now over he’s busy with Ultimate all year round.

“We’re always excited to welcome new players. Right now the spring league has six teams with typically 12-15 players per team. There’s summer pickup and drop-in, outdoor fall league, and indoor options throughout the winter.”

Ultimate is described as a mix of three sports: football, soccer, and basketball. The goal is for one team to catch the disc in the opposing team’s end zone with each score worth one point.

“It’s a fun and affordable way to stay in shape and meet great people in a very welcoming environment,” Pfeifer said. “Anyone interested should visit nanaimoultimate.ca to learn more.”
