Campfires still permitted across Vancouver Island over May long weekend

NANAIMO — Ahead of the May long weekend the Coastal Fire Centre is enacting bans on larger open fires, but not campfires.

The restrictions start Friday, May 17 at 12 p.m. and covers the entire Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction, including all of Vancouver Island.

Wildfire information officer Sam Bellion said weather conditions have reached the point in the year where people need to limit their fire activity.

“This is going to include backyard and industrial burning along with other specific equipment and activities, such as fireworks, sky lanterns and things like binary exploding targets.”

However, campfires are still permitted for now, under certain conditions.

“We are just still asking folks to be responsible with campfires,” said Bellion. “Never leave them unattended. Keep them small under half a meter by half a meter. And of course, to put them out fully before leaving the area.”

These types of fire bans are typical for this time of year, being implemented on the same day last year ahead of B.C.’s worst wildfire season on record.

Bellion said as the province prepares for another potentially severe wildfire season, it’s important to be prepared in the event of a disaster, with this year’s theme for emergency preparedness week touching on using technology before, during, and after an emergency.

“Downloaded the newest version of the BC wildfire app. There are loads of new features to explore and you want to be familiar with where to find the most current and up-to-date information before you find yourself in an emergency situation.”

A map of the affected areas can be found here.

The bans will remain in place until Oct. 31 unless rescinded earlier.
