UPDATE: Missing Parksville man found deceased by search crews

UPDATE — Oceanside RCMP report John Mathers was found, deceased, by search crews on Wednesday, April 17.

“The cause of his death is not considered suspicious. The RCMP offers its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” the detachment said in a statement.

EARLIER, PARKSVILLE — A search resumes Tuesday for a missing man in the Oceanside region.

John Mathers, 75, was reported missing by family in the afternoon hours of Monday, April 15 after he left his home in the morning to run errands and did not return as expected.

Mathers’ truck was found unoccupied around 7 p.m. at Englishman River Falls Park in Errington.

Subsequent searches of the surrounding area from police and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue crews failed to locate Mathers.

Crews were on scene until about 11:30 p.m. Monday evening and resumed their efforts at daybreak on Tuesday, April 16.

People in the area can expect to see an increased presence throughout the day.

Mathers is described as 5’10” tall, 140 pounds with balding light brown hair and a short beard.

He was last seen wearing black sweat pants, a black jacket and baseball cap with grey running shoes.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Mathers is asked to contact Oceanside RCMP at 250 248 6111.
