Pedestrian dies after hit by truck in central Nanaimo, driver in custody

NANAIMO — A 53-year-old woman hit by a truck in Nanaimo near the hospital on Tuesday has died as a result of her injuries.

Emergency crews were called to Boundary Ave. near Meredith Rd. in front of the Nanaimo Alliance Church on Tuesday, April 2 shortly before 12:30 p.m. in response to a pedestrian hit by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

In a news release, Nanaimo RCMP stated the female pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene, while the man driving the truck was taken into police custody and is under investigation for impaired driving.

Police confirm the driver was a 58-year-old Nanaimo man.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Capt. Ian Stenberg told NanaimoNewsNOW on scene that an ambulance happened to be near the incident and immediately responded.

“We arrived on scene, ambulance was already on scene, there was compression being performed on a female and they loaded her and rushed her to the hospital. The driver stuck around.”

A light pole was rammed over by the truck in the incident.

RCMP are looking for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone who saw the subject vehicle prior to the incident, to contact them.
