NANAIMO — The Clippers erased a 3-0 and 4-1 deficit but had to settle for a single point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Capitals.

Spencer Shugrue with two goals and Luke Lavery with another, gave Cowichan a 3-0 lead before Remi Gelinas notched his first as a Clipper with 17 seconds left to play in the opening period.

The Capitals Matthew Swanson put the Clippers down three again with a deflected shot that fooled Chazz Nixon mid way through the middle frame.

Late second period goals by Cole Lonsdale on a power play and a bar down shot from Chase Hull put Nanaimo in striking distance going to the third period.

Lonsdale scored again in the third on a beautiful set up from Brett Merner to give the Clippers a point and force overtime.

After a scoreless OT Cowichan’s Gavin Giesbrecht tallied the winner in the fourth round of the shootout.

The shots finished 44-33 for Cowichan Valley with Nanaimo going 1/5 on the power play and 1/1 killing penalties.

Despite the loss the Clippers finished the season series with the Capitals with a 5-1-0-1 record.

Nanaimo has road games in Chilliwack, Coquitlam and Surrey upcoming on Feb. 28, Mar. 1 and Mar. 2.
