The Independent Investigations Office of BC is seeking witnesses regarding the death of 83-year old Brian Watkins.

The elderly man with dementia was reported missing last week, and was found by police on Sunday inside his submerged vehicle off Lakeshore Road.

Port Alberni RCMP received a call from someone concerned about Watkins well-being on Wednesday at 6:45 pm.

Two hours later an officer located and spoke to him.

Then at 10:25 p.m., he was reported as missing.

The IIO will investigate the details of the interaction between the man and officer, and where the man went after speaking to the officer.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
