PORT ALBERNI – Port Alberni was well-represented at the B-C Non-profit Housing Association’s annual conference that concluded yesterday in Vancouver.

More than 1600 delegates attended Canada’s premier affordable housing conference that featured 120 different sessions on accessible housing.
City councillor Todd Patola said Port Alberni is doing well in making lands available for non-profit housing, but more work needs to be done.
“We do make Port Alberni-owned lands available for housing,” he said. “We are developing a more cohesive strategy and policy for how we do that, but we are certainly still committed to making sure that happens, not only with City-owned lands but also facilitating development on privately-owned lands.”
He said lessons learned at the sold-out conference will assist the city in conducting a housing needs assessment as part of the Official Community Plan.
Patola, who is also the chair of the local Canadian Mental Health Association said he was most interested in recent studies proving the economic benefits of low income housing.
