High Coliform Discovered in Raw Water

PORT ALBERNI – A popular source of spring water showed high levels of coliform recently, according to Sproat Lake area director Penny Cote.
The water runs out a pipe that juts out of a rock in the Taylor Arm section of Highway 4, and Cote says there are often line-ups of people filling large bottles with the raw water which is unfiltered, untreated, and not chlorinated.
She says she has accessed the water for 15 years, and tests it before use, and said recent samples showed 170 total coliforms in the water, which is the highest she’s ever seen.
Although the water source is not monitored and not anyone’s responsibility, the regional district said they will put up a sign beside the pipe, warning people of the danger.
