Nominations open for 19th annual Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards

NANAIMO — Celebrating the best in local sports in 2023 is the goal for the Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards.

The nominations for the 19th annual event are now open.

Athlete, teams, coaches, officials or sport administrators, including junior and masters athletes from Ladysmith to Nanoose Bay, are eligible for recognition.

Organizers are looking to fill 17 different categories by the deadline of Dec. 31.

Two additional award winners in honour of local sporting heroes will also be selected.

The Michael Rhode Memorial Award is presented to someone who gives time, energy and commitment to sports and to the community, while the Steve Smith Memorial Award is for outstanding achievement and dedication to extreme sports.

Nominees for wide array of awards will be judged on their achievements in 2023, while volunteers will be considered for their long-term commitment to sports.

A fillable nomination form is available online at nanaimosportachievementawards.ca and can be filled out by anybody in the sports community looking for recognition or on behalf of someone else.

A panel of judges will narrow down each category to a group of finalists and select the winners.

The Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards ceremony itself is coming up on Feb. 23, 2024 at the Coast Bastion Hotel.

The 2022 winners include Jim Swanson of the Nanaimo NightOwls for Sports Administrator of the Year, race walker Olivia Lundman as Female Individual Athlete of the Year and Ethan Katzberg won for Male Individual Athlete of the Year with tremendous results in the hammer throw.

The Team of the Year was the VIU Mariners women’s basketball team and the Sports Story of the Year went to Jaime Garcia for winning the World Championship Bathtub Race.
