NANAIMO — The largest seniors bonspiel of the season is coming to the Nanaimo Curling Club.

The Nanaimo Masters Open Bonspiel is slated for Nov. 23-25.

Event organizer Bob Larsen said there are 16 teams entered so far.

“We have players coming from Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum and Port Alberni. Most of the entries are from our club but were hoping to get more from out of town.”

Each of the rink will have two draws per day in the morning and in the afternoon.

“It’s a random draw so you’re guaranteed six games. The first four games seed you into groups of four.”

Sixteen rinks allows for a simple tournament format, but Larsen said if they get interest for an additional four teams they could go with a draw of 20.

Many of the competitors come from one of Nanaimo’s masters leagues.

Larsen himself plays in a senior men’s league on Tuesdays and Fridays and there is also a women’s league and mixed league as well.

Tournament rules allow for women aged 50 and over and, men aged 60 plus.

The masters open is not the only upcoming event at the Nanaimo Curling Club.

The Nanaimo Men’s Hangover Bonspiel runs Nov. 17-19 with registration closing on Nov. 10.

Larsen said several players will be playing in both events.
