Nanaimo woman ‘Set for Life’ after $675k lotto win

Oct 11, 2023 | 9:38 AM

NANAIMO — A relaxing morning at home with a cup of coffee was life-changing for a local woman.

Vera Strand is $675,000 richer after claiming the top prize on a Set For Life lottery ticket, purchased from Fairway Market at Nanaimo North Town Centre.

Strand held onto the ticket for a couple of days before scratching it with her self-admitted ‘special dime’ and couldn’t believe her eyes.

“I FaceTimed my daughter to ask her if I was seeing things,” Strand said. “I thought, ‘Wow, I have won!’”

The news is still processing for Strand, who doesn’t have many concrete plans for the windfall. She said she’ll likely enjoy some “nice family dinners” going forward.

She added the money gives “added security for retirement.”

Strand’s win continues an extended run of luck for Nanaimo area lotto players.

Well over two dozen tickets purchased in Nanaimo since 2012 have won $500,000 or more, including a local man who won $1 million from an early August Lotto Max draw.

In 2023 to date, over $8 million has been won through the Set for Life tickets in B.C.
