QUALICUM BEACH — A new 56-unit apartment and townhome development had its groundbreaking ceremony in Qualicum Beach on Tuesday, July 4.

Located at 136 Village Way W., The Residence at Qualicum Station is a four-story building which will have a mix of studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartments and townhomes for families, seniors, and those with low to moderate incomes.

“This is the first major housing project in Qualicum Beach to be funded through our Building BC investments and I know it will have a tremendous impact to the community by providing families and seniors with safe, secure housing to grow and prosper,” said minister of housing Ravi Kahlon.

The building is also next to a community garden and within walking distance of several amenities, including schools, medical facilities, and public transit.

The housing unit will be owned and operated by the Qualicum-Parksville Kiwanis Housing Society (QPKHS).

President Scott Rodway said this new build will help foster a sense of community and will ease a bit of the communities housing needs.

“We would like to thank the residents of Qualicum Beach for their support in the development of The Residences at Qualicum Station and to acknowledge the assistance of the Province, BC Housing, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Town of Qualicum Beach.”

The Town provided the land valued at $3.3 million and leased it to the QPKHS for a nominal fee.

The Province provided $6.3 million to the project through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund and will provide $313,000 annually as an operating subsidy.

The federal government also contributed $92,000.

The Residence at Qualicum Station is part of $19 billion in housing investments by the provincial government.

Residents can expect to move into their new homes in early 2025.
