DUNCAN — A suspect driver was shot after allegedly ramming his vehicle into a North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP vehicle.

An officer was doing a police vehicle check at the time when they were hit on Friday, May 12 at about 6:30 a.m. inside the Canada Ave. detachment parking lot in Duncan.

“A second officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle striking the driver. Both the injured RCMP officer and the suspect have been transported to hospital with what are both believed to be non-life threatening injuries,” an RCMP news release stated.

The injured officer was doing a police vehicle check at the time.

Insp. Chris Bear, officer in charge of the detachment, called the incident “very disturbing” for their members and employees.

He said additional support resources have been brought to the detachment.

“…core policing operations for the community will not be impacted. We are unsure what the man’s intentions were at this time, but the investigation will look to determine that,” Bear stated in the release.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP is investigating the Friday morning incident, as is the Independent Investigations Office of BC.

Walk-in front counter service at the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment has been closed to accommodate the investigation, while all other police services continue to be provided.
