Clippers lose 3-1 in Langley to fall behind in opening round series

NANAIMO — The Clippers got off to a great start in Game 3 of the playoffs against Langley but couldn’t sustain it through 60 minutes.

Brody Waters scored on a power play tip in eight minutes into the contest and Nanaimo led 1-0 at the first intermission.

Nanaimo also outshot the Rivermen 16-6 in the period.

Langley vaulted into the lead thanks to a pair of man advantage goals in the middle frame.

Garrett Valk tallied three minutes in on a shot from the left circle and Nick Messina buried a rebound nine minutes later.

Joseph Messina sniped a high shot passed Aidan Campbell mid way through the third period to provide some insurance.

Nanaimo outshot Langley 37-27 but for the second straight game Ajeet Gundarah allowed only one game and was named the first star.

The Rivermen went 2/5 on the power play while the Clippers finished 1/6.

Five of the Clippers six goals in the series have come on the man advantage but they’ve also allowed four power play goals against on eight Langley opportunities.

Injuries are starting to mount on both sides with Dominick Rivelli leaving in the first period of Game 3 and Nanaimo’s Charles Tardif exiting early in the second.

Neither was able to return to action.

The Rivermen take a 2-1 series lead into Game 4 on April 4 at the George Preston Recreation Centre.

Game time is at 7:15 p.m.
