NANAIMO — A 23-year-old motorcyclist was left seriously injured and remains in hospital after a crash Thursday evening.

Emergency personnel were called to the intersection of Fifth St. and Howard Ave. around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 after a light coloured sedan collided with a motorcycle.

“It appeared the collision occurred in the intersection,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “The driver of the motor vehicle was going northbound on Howard Ave., crossed through the intersection and collided with the eastbound motorcycle.”

The rider was initially treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, before being flown to Victoria for further care.

The driver of the vehicle, a 70-year-old woman, was left uninjured but shaken by the incident. O’Brien said she remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

“The scene was closed for several hours, both vehicles were towed from the scene and will undergo mechanical examination and we’re looking for any witnesses who may have left the scene and have information on it.”

O’Brien added the investigation is still in its early stages.

“Alcohol and drugs were ruled out on the part of the driver of the motor vehicle. Speed [of the motorcycle] however has not been ruled out at this point.”

Anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, or additional information which may help investigators, is asked to contact the Nanaimo detachment at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2023-10539.
