Clippers offence shutdown in 4-1 loss to Powell River

Jan 27, 2023 | 11:43 PM

NANAIMO — After an eleven day all-star break the Clippers hit a road block in their first game back against the Powell River Kings.

A rebound goal by Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero opened the scoring for the Kings but Nanaimo tied the game 1-1 on a power play marker from Kai Daniells.

Will Jones put the Kings up 2-1 midway through the first period and the visitors never looked back.

The Clippers were assessed a bench minor at the end of the opening 20 minutes, but they didn’t realize at the time head coach Colin Birkas would also be ejected from game.

Birkas was sent back the dressing room before the opening faceoff of the midde frame and 29 seconds into the period Noah Eyre scored on a four on three power play.

Though the Clippers had a number of chances the rest of the way first star Liam Vanderkooi stopped 33 of 34 shots for the win.

Aidan Campbell took the loss for Nanaimo with a 28 save performance.

Eyre’s second goal of the night in the third period capped off the scoring.

Nanaimo had numerous chances on the man advantage going 1/6 while the Kings finished 1/2.

Through five games of the season series the road team has won every game.

The Clippers will try to reverse that trend on Saturday Jan. 28 with a rematch against the Kings at Frank Crane Arena.
