Number one ranking for senior boys highlights Dover Bay high school basketball season

NANAIMO — Basketball programs for boys and girls in Grade 8-12 are well underway in local high shools including Dover Bay.

The 12-5 senior boys team at Dover has recently achieved the number one ranking in AAA in the province.

Coach Darren Seaman said the squad has had high expectations from the outset.

“We believed we could be there so this solidifies all their hard work is paying off. We were at the UVIC tournament over Christmas and that really helped put some of our players on the map. We beat Oak Bay in the semi final for the first time since 2011 so that really opened up the eyes of the BC basketball community.”

The senior boys have four games scheduled at a tournament at Claremont Secondary from Jan. 5-7.

They opened play with a convincing 120-30 win over Esquimalt on Thursday, Jan. 5.

Dover Bay is hosting a junior girls tournament the Jan. 6-7 weekend.

Grade 9 girls coach Shayne Pfeiffer said it’s a highlight on the schedule for his team.

“It’ll be probably our only tournament of the year. It was a team formed to give those Grade 9 girls who didn’t make our junior team a chance to keep playing. This team is a strong bunch of athletes.”

There are five girls teams in total at Dover Bay this season, two Grade 8 squads, the Grade 9’s plus junior and senior squads.

Pfeiffer said he’s really focussed on teaching fundamentals to his student athletes.

“It’s all about the basics and making sure the players are learning the game and learning how to be the best athletes they can be. The systems and coaching philosophies get added in later on.”

On the girls side Nanaimo Christian School had the only ranked teams in the latest provincial rankings.

Both the junior and senior teams made the BC top ten in single A.

With the senior boys Wellington Secondary came in ninth in the latest AAA rankings, John Barsby wad eighth in AA and Nanaimo Christian School was seventh in single A.
