Snow and ice conditions cancel school, other activities throughout Nanaimo & Oceanside

NANAIMO — Snow throughout much of Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday continues to impact the region.

School District 68, in Nanaimo and Ladysmith, has closed its schools for Wednesday, Nov. 30, citing “lingering snow on the ground and freezing temperatures”. Oceanside schools in SD69 remain open, however school buses will not be operating.

Vancouver Island University has also closed its campuses in Nanaimo and Parksville as a result of the weather.

City of Nanaimo rec programs are also being put on hold, at least for the morning hours.

All registered programs run by the City are cancelled until at least 12 p.m. on Wednesday, but both Beban Pool and the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre remain open and available for use.

A decision will be made later in the day on afternoon scheduled activities.

Transit remains relatively unaffected throughout Nanaimo and the Regional District, however is expected to run a little slower with the road conditions.

Detours are in place for routes 1, 40 and 30. More information is available on the RDN’s Transit Notices page.

Forecasters are calling for mainly cloudy skies on Wednesday with some lingering rain or snow flurries in the morning, but clearing through the day.

Another two centimetres of snow is expected in the Nanaimo region Wednesday night with temperatures staying below three degrees through to the weekend.
