Back and forth third period ends with a Clippers 6-5 loss in Surrey

NANAIMO — The Clippers almost played in two completely different games in one night in a 6-5 loss to the Surrey Eagles.

Through 40 minutes it was a very typical Nanaimo game with the Clippers holding a 2-1 lead and each team directing 17 shots on net.

After Logan Lorenz opened the scoring on an early Eagles power play Michael Craig tied the game at the five minute mark and Brody Waters notched the only tally of the middle frame.

Everything changed in the third period with the teams combining for eight goals.

A pair from Jacob Bonkowski and another goal by Ante Zlomislic put Surrey up 4-2.

Then the Clippers scored three times in 40 seconds to take a 5-4 lead thanks to Jeremie Payant and back to back goals for Kai Daniells.

Cole Galata knotted the game at 5-5 to set the stage for Oliver Gabrielson to pot the game winner with a minute and a half left.

Daniells finished with two goals and an assist and Craig had a goal and two assists to lead the Nanaimo offense.

The final shots ended up 43-37 for the Clippers with Nanaimo going 1/3 on the power play and 1/2 killing penalties.

Nanaimo’s record falls to 16-4 and the season series with Surrey is now tied at 1-1.

The Clippers will travel to Powell River for their next game on Nov. 25 and wrap up the month with a visit to Cowichan Valley on Nov. 27.
