Semi crash & fuel spill leads to hours-long delay along Hwy. 19

NANAIMO — An extensive motor vehicle incident along Hwy. 19 Monday afternoon led to long traffic jams, with the prospect of more delays to come.

Just before 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, Oceanside RCMP received reports of a semi truck and trailer leaving the highway and crashing into a house, just south of the NW Bay Rd. intersection.

No-one was home at the time however the incident led to long-standing traffic issues for northbound travellers on Hwy. 19 throughout the afternoon and early evening hours.

“The tractor itself was completely imbedded within the residence and leaking diesel fuel,” Cpl. Alex Bérubé said in a release. “It took several hours for rescue teams to extract the driver from the wreckage before he was transported to hospital by Air Ambulance.”

An investigation is continuing, but it’s believed a medical event with the driver played a role in the crash.

BC Emergency Health Services stated a paramedic was injured at the scene and was transported to hospital by a ground ambulance.

The incident occurred roughly 200 metres past the start of a 60 kilometre per hour zone leading into Nanoose Bay.

Crews remain on scene Tuesday, Oct. 4 and are awaiting the appropriate equipment to remove the vehicle from the house.

Police warned there may be additional traffic delays for northbound vehicles during this operation, although no timeline was offered.

Cars snaked back as far as Ware Rd. in Lantzville following the incident.
