Donald Lloyd Workman of Nanaimo, BC, age 82, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2022. He was born on October 13, 1939, son of the late Lloyd and Irene (Newman) Workman.
Don is survived by his wife Marean and two sons, Greg (Tiah) and Todd (Stephanie); grandchildren Graeme (Carolyn), Sean (Melissa), Brynn and Liam; great grandchildren Olivia and Cole; brother Gordon (Faye) brothers in-law Gerry (Ann) Gagnon and Bob (Susan) Gagnon; sister in-Law Shirley (John) Square-Briggs and many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard, mother and father-in-law Margaret and Jean Gagnon.
Don was happiest when spending time and sharing his love of nature with those close to him – preferably on the water or in the mountains. He was an avid hunter and angler and spent countless hours pursuing both. He especially enjoyed salmon fishing with his friends and family in the Alberni canal, Barclay Sound, or off the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Don graduated from Mechanical Engineering at UBC in 1969. He was a dedicated Professional Engineer, known for his skill and depth of knowledge. Don maintained tight ties to his classmates across the decades and until recently the group held annual boating get-togethers. He took his career and family across Canada and around the world after graduation while working for Atomic Energy of Canada before returning home to Nanaimo in 1974 to join the engineering department at Harmac. Nanaimo was the place he spent his early childhood and loved most for its seaside setting and proximity to the great BC outdoors.
He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank the first responders and first floor medical staff at Nanaimo General Hospital for their dedicated and compassionate care during Don’s short stay. They would also like to thank all their family and friends for their kind wishes and words of support.
