UPDATE: Arrest made, charge laid after ATM theft using loaded syringe

UPDATE — Nanaimo RCMP advise the man wanted by police was arrested. The 51-year-old man was charged with robbery and released under a promise to appear in court in late November.

NANAIMO — Police are looking for the public’s help after a man was robbed of cash at a local ATM.

RCMP reports a man was withdrawing cash at the TD Bank on Nicol St., near Port Place Shopping Centre, around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 when a man approached and threatened him with a syringe, demanding money.

The man complied and handed over a small amount of cash before the suspect fled.

He’s described as caucasian, of medium build and height. He was wearing a faded, dark green shirt and matching shorts at the time of the robbery.

The man was not injured during the theft.

An appeal to the public by police was delayed as officers only recently received security camera footage of the incident.

If anyone has information on this incident or the identity of the person involved, they’re asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2022-27197.
