Improperly licensed driver rams through light pole near busy E&N Trail

NANAIMO — Luckily only the driver sustained minor injuries following a single vehicle crash on the Island Highway in front of Country Club Centre adjacent to a popular multi-use trail.

An older model Honda sedan heading south on the highway crashed through a light pole, sending the heavy device to the ground on Thursday Aug. 18 just after 11 a.m.

Nanaimo Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said the 29-year-old motorist, and vehicle’s lone occupant, was a class seven driver, meaning she only had her learner’s license.

“The accident was very close to the E&N Trail, which is heavily used by walkers and bikers, so that could have had a secondary impact.”

O’Brien said it’s unclear what led to the accident, noting one of the tickets against the driver was for driving without due care and attention.

“Several charges under the Motor Vehicle Act (were applied), the vehicle was towed and the traffic was delayed for some time.”

O’Brien noted the motorist was checked over on scene, but didn’t require further medical attention.

Remnants from the badly damaged vehicle surrounded the toppled steel light pole on the grassy section between the highway and E&N Trail.
