NANAIMO — Local Mounties are searching for a man, believed to be the driver of a vehicle which plowed into a local supportive housing complex.

A Nanaimo RCMP officer began to initiate a traffic stop just on Tuesday, March 15 just before 10 a.m. after seeing the driver of an older model Chevy Cavalier fail to signal on a right turn at the corner of Cavan St. and Victoria Rd.

Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the driver then sped off, blowing through two stop signs on Albert St.

“(The situation) was based on the driver deciding not to stop for a police officer after failing to signal on a right turn, so the officer elected to stop the vehicle and the driver had a different agenda and took off at a high rate of speed.”

The same vehicle then smashed into the fencing of Newcastle Place on Terminal Ave.

The incident caused significant traffic delays along Terminal Ave. while emergency crews dealt with the written off vehicle.

Witnesses told police a man got out of the vehicle and fled the scene, who police believe was the driver.

A woman was found in the car, however O’Brien said “she wasn’t cooperative and provided little information.”

Police Dog Services attempted to track the man, but were unsuccessful.

“We assume (the man was) probably the driver and he was running, most likely there were outstanding warrants or outstanding charges, it’s why most people run,” O’Brien said.

RCMP are looking for any dash cam or security footage from the area around the time of the incident which could help with their investigation.

People can contact the Nanaimo detachment at 250-754-2345 and quote file number 2022-8767.

O’Brien added despite the end result, the officer involved in the attempted traffic stop did the right thing given the vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the downtown at the time of the incident.

“There are so many factors to take into consideration when stopping a vehicle and when the driver of a vehicle decides to flee, we have to be so cautious of the factors around us and they did the right thing by letting it go.”
