Clippers suffer 5-0 home ice loss to Chilliwack

NANAIMO — The Clippers failed to score for just the second time this season in a 5-0 loss to the Chilliwack Chiefs.

With Clipper coaches Darren Naylor and Colin Birkas on temporary leave veteran junior hockey coach Bob Beatty ran the bench with assistant Ken McPhalen.

Beatty is a familiar name for Vancouver Island hockey fans.

He coached the Cowichan Valley Capitals from 2013-2017 and guided the Shawnigan Lake Prep U15 squad from 2017-2019.

In a fast paced opening period the Chiefs scored once and upped their lead to 2-0 with another tally in the middle frame.

Chilliwack outshot Nanaimo 12-4 added added three more goals in the third period to take the victory.

Chad Muller led the offence for the visitors with three goals while netminder Grant Riley recorded a 29 save shutout, his third of the season.

The loss flipped the two teams in the Coastal Division standings with Nanaimo dropping to fourth place and the Chiefs overtaking the Clippers for third.

A busy family day weekend for the Clippers continues with a home game against Victoria on Feb. 19 and a Feb. 21 matinee in Alberni Valley.

Coaches Beatty and McPhalen are expected to be behind the bench for at least for the remainder of the weekend.
