Cargo ferry dispute to impact Vancouver Island supply chain

Jan 20, 2022 | 2:31 PM

NANAIMO — A vital marine commercial cargo carrier which delivers goods between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland is slated to be impacted by strike action.

Seaspan Ferries informed customers their Canadian Merchant Services Guild members are scheduled to begin strike action on Friday, Jan. 21 following failed extended contract negotiations.

Seaspan Ferries will operate limited commercial sailings at 30 per cent carrying capacity beginning Friday afternoon.

One daily round trip to Duke Point and a return sailing to Duke Point six days a week will be permitted during the duration of strike action.

Due to the capacity reduction “Seaspan will need to manage all traffic closely to ensure that key and essential traffic can continue to move,” the notice bulletin stated.

“Seaspan Ferries remains optimistic that we can reach a deal that is good for all parties and return to regular operations.”

Seaspan Ferries delivers general freight products, consumer goods, regulated commodities and automobiles between two Vancouver Island terminals and two on the Lower Mainland (Surrey/Delta).
