Beleaguered cargo ship completes unloading damaged containers in Nanaimo

Dec 31, 2021 | 12:17 PM

NANAIMO — Following a three week effort nearly 60 damaged containers from a battered cargo ship have been offloaded in Nanaimo.

Ian Marr, president and CEO of the Nanaimo Port Authority, confirmed the MV Zim Kingston pulled out out of its Duke Point deep sea dock late on Thursday, Dec 30.

The large 260 metre long vessel isn’t leaving Nanaimo’s waters just yet, however.

Marr said the boat will be anchored off Duke Point until space is available for its expected final destination at Delta Port in Tsawwassen.

“All of our partners worked together well to responsibly unload the containers, I think they all did a phenomenal job,” Marr said.

The vessel’s stay at the Duke Point dock included a minor container fire on Dec 21.

About 2,000 undamaged containers remain on the ship originally loaded in China and south Korea.

An arduous journey for MV Zim Kingston took hold during strong late October storms off B.C’s coast sending more than 100 of its containers overboard, while a fire then damaged several containers.

Bins later burst open and washed ashore on north Vancouver Island beaches.

MV Zim Kingston was anchored for several weeks off Victoria before it was escorted to Nanaimo in early December.
