Nanaimo ranks first in Canada for tipping generosity, manners

NANAIMO — Local diners are among Canada’s most generous and polite, according to a new survey.

Delivery company Uber Eats pulled data from orders submitted through their service to date in 2021, showing the Harbour City coming out on top in two key categories.

Nanaimo ranked as the most polite city, judged by the number of times ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ was included in the online ordering instructions.

The city out-thanked Ottawa, Kingston, and Victoria.

Orders from Nanaimo also came with the greatest gratuity on average, polling first in a list of cities which tip the most. Victoria and Kelowna rounded out the top three.

Local eaters seem relatively ‘average’ in many other categories featured in the survey. For example, Nanaimo doesn’t feature in the top 10 of ‘most picky city’ highlighting orders with the most special instructions.

Common special instructions included extra pickles and gluten-free options.

Regrettably, despite a move toward active transportation in recent years, diners are yet to heed the message as Nanaimo was listed outside the top 10 for the most healthy orders.

Japanese food was the most ordered food genre so far this year nation-wide, followed by an amalgamation of other Asian cuisines, Indian and Mexican.

Despite none of the top four cuisines really highlighting them, chicken nuggets were the most requested side dish followed by fries and poutine.

A $1,600 order in Vancouver was the largest one registered through the company this year
