Island Health’s active COVID-19 case count continues slide down

NANAIMO — There continues to be fewer active COVID-19 cases throughout Island Health.

Data from the health authority showed 413 active cases as of Wednesday, Oct. 20, a drop of 20 from the day prior.

Central Vancouver Island remained the same over the last 24 hours, with 205 active. The south Island has 172 with the remaining 36 in the north.

Island Health reported 54 new cases Wednesday, including 32 in the central Island.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The BC Centre for Disease Control lists 52 patients in Vancouver Island hospitals for COVID-19 including 25 in critical care.

Across B.C., a further 696 new cases were confirmed by public health with active cases dropping slightly to 4,888.

Hospitalizations continue to remain high, driven primarily by people with no vaccination history. Over the past two weeks, nearly 70 per cent of all hospitalizations are people who haven’t received a single dose of vaccine.

A total of 370 patients are admitted across B.C., including 139 people receiving intensive care.

Six people lost their lives to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, all on the Lower Mainland.
