Unexpected costs arise while overhauling Serauxmen Stadium

NANAIMO — Upgrading a well used baseball stadium in Nanaimo will cost more than originally planned.

A City staff report estimated $150,000 will be required to safely remove many years of paint on the stadium building and seating.

“Proper removal of the many years and layers of paint on the seating and stadium building requires testing and a special method of removal. Testing results of the old paint layers also required that a specialty contractor be hired to perform the abatement work in a safe manner,” the report stated.

The City intends to coordinate the required work with ongoing upgrades at the stadium, featuring new fencing, expanded seating and safety netting valued at more than $1 million.

Money for the Serauxmen Stadium paint work will come from a surplus funds from an earlier project and won’t require a future endorsement from councillors, the City confirmed.

Serauxmen Stadium receives heavy use from multiple user groups, including Nanaimo Minor Baseball, the Mid Island Pirates and will be home to the expansion Nanaimo NightOwls, who are projected to begin play in the 2022 season.

Adding lighting to the 45-year-old City-owned facility last year was the first of multiple upgrades made to the venue located on Third St. near NDSS.

A new scoreboard will also be added to the stadium.
