Island Health sees active COVID-19 cases drop across the board

NANAIMO — Island Health has seen its active case COVID-19 case count drop for the first time in a week.

43 fewer people were dealing with symptoms Thursday than were reported on Wednesday, with 616 active cases across the health authority including 248 within the central Island.

The drop came amid 77 new cases being added to Island Health’s total with 36 stemming from central Vancouver Island.

To date, 9,126 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Island Health since the start of the pandemic.

The BC Centre for Disease Control reports 43 people admitted to Island hospitals, including 22 in critical care wards.

Across B.C., 624 new cases were reported by the province on Thursday. Active cases remained relatively unchanged for the third day in a row, now at 5,929.

Fraser Health (258) and Interior Health (118) led the way and were the only health authorities to post triple-digit additions.

B.C. hospitals have 373 patients admitted for COVID-19 symptoms including 132 who are receiving intensive care.

Another four deaths linked to COVID were recorded, including one in Island Health.

The percentage of people who have had a second dose of COVID-19 administered rose to 82.1 per cent on Thursday, with 3.8 million people rolling up their sleeves twice.
