Evacuation order lifted for three properties near Mt. Law wildfire

As the lowering temperatures and increased precipitation have reduced the fire activity at the north end of the Mt. Law wildfire in West Kelowna, the evacuation order has been reduced to an alert for three more properties.

Residents at 3713 and 3725 Emerald Road and at 3770 Turnbull Road are now able to return to their properties.

The evacuation order is still in place for 4713 MacKinnon Road and 3250 Highway 97.

“We are grateful to return nearly all West Kelowna residents to their homes today and want to thank them for their cooperation,” said Jason Brolund, Fire Chief of West Kelowna Fire Rescue.

“The Mount Law wildfire remains active and considered out of control. We would like to thank BC Wildfire Service for standing alongside us and for continually increasing resources to help fire suppression efforts.”

All other evacuation orders and alerts remain in place.

People returning to their properties following an evacuation are warned that they might encounter hazards, such as unstable ground, gas leaks, damaged trees that have become fragile and could fall, downed power lines, and distressed and displaced animals.

People are also advised to check and photograph any property damage, to be cautious when entering a structure, and to check the condition of any food left in freezers or refrigerators.

The public is also asked to stay out of the way of emergency vehicles and crews, as work to suppress the fire in the area is ongoing.

The lifting of the evacuation order doesn’t mean the risk is completely gone, and residents are advised to monitor the Central Okanagan Regional District’s Emergency Operations website in case an order is reissued and people need to vacate the area once again.
