Downed utility line snarls traffic, leaves more than 1,000 without power

Aug 3, 2021 | 11:02 AM

NANAIMO — A bird hitting a power transformer in downtown Nanaimo caused a utility line to fall, leading to a substantial power outage and traffic delays.

The crown corporation reported the incident occurred just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Front St. in front of the Gabriola Island ferry terminal, cutting off power to 1,200 BC Hydro customers in downtown Nanaimo and to the south straddling the entire span of Haliburton St.

BC Hydro crews arrived on scene shortly after the incident to find a power line across Front St. at the rear entrance to Port Place shopping centre.

The utility provider reported power was restored at 1 p.m.

The fallen line didn’t appear to cause any injuries.

The incident caused delays for traffic boarding and disembarking the ferry at the adjacent Nanaimo terminal serving Gabriola Island.

Motorists at impacted intersections are reminded to treat intersections with flashing red lights as a four-way stop during outages.
