NANAIMO — Sheldon Rempal is coming back to the province where he had tremendous success as a Junior hockey player.

The 25-year-old was signed to a two-way contract by the Vancouver Canucks on July 28.

“I was ecstatic when I knew Vancouver was one of the teams interested in me. I was an unrestricted free agent so I was able to pick and choose where I was able to go. To head back to B.C. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Rempal spent last season with the Carolina Hurricanes organization getting into three games with the NHL squad and recording 14 points in 25 games with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL.

The Calgary native has his sights set on staying in the NHL full time this season.

“My goal is to play in the NHL. It was nice to get in some games with Carolina to know that I can play in that league. Coming to Vancouver I think it’s going to be a good opportunity.”

Rempal was a star with the Nanaimo Clippers from 2013-2016 putting up 213 points in 167 games, including a 59 goal and 110 point campaign in his final year of Junior.

The Nanaimo Clippers still hold fond memories for Rempal.

“Obviously it was a fun time for me and that group. It was an extreme highlight of career. It was a blast my three years there and a lot of people reached out to me when the news hit. It was awesome to reconnect with the local people in Nanaimo. It was a time I’ll never forget.”

Rempal wasn’t the only ex Clipper to sign a pro contract at the beginning of NHL free agency, former team Captain Matt Irwin also signed a two-way deal with the Washington Capitals.

Irwin played in Nanaimo from 2005-2008 and was named the best defenceman in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference in both 2007 and 2008.
