NANAIMO — Two troublesome areas in the region will receive provincial funding to bolster safety for pedestrians.

A portion of Hwy. 1, also known as Stewart Ave., connecting Nanaimo’s downtown to Departure Bay ferry terminal will receive more lighting and illuminated signage.

Meanwhile, a 5.2 kilometre stretch of Cedar Rd. is destined for shoulder widening and crosswalks to make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

No information was available about the timeline of the work on Stewart Ave. or Cedar Rd.

The projects are part of a nearly $5 million from the provincial government to fund construction of pedestrian safety and active transportation projects.

The announcement, exclusively for Vancouver Island and the surrounding Gulf Islands, also includes shoulder grading, widening and paving in Qualicum Bay.

“Projects included multi-use pathways and rail trails, highway crossings, transit stop improvements, sidewalk installations, lighting enhancements and shoulder widening that make active modes of transportation safer and more accessible,” a release from the province read.

A further $4 million was included for environmental upgrades including a number of culverts in the Nanaimo and Oceanside region.
