LILLOOET, B.C. — A weekend boating incident on Seton Lake near Lillooet claimed three lives, and investigators are still trying to determine what happened.

In a news release, RCMP say the incident took place just before 2:00 a.m. on Sunday (June 27).

At that time, a member of the public called 9-1-1, saying he had heard a powerboat on Seton Lake followed by the sound of a loud bang. The beach-goer told police he believed the sound came from about one kilometre off shore.

RCMP and Search and Rescue volunteers prepared to deploy at first light.

Just after 7:00 a.m., a civilian boater came across a partially capsized boat and bodies in the water.

Officials from Seton Fire Department were joined by SAR personnel and Department of Fisheries and Oceans personnel in recovering the wreckage and the three deceased people.

Two men and woman have been identified as the victims. Their families have been notified.

In addition to RCMP, the B.C. Coroners Service is investigating.
