Nabil Doss is the voice of French Paramount Pictures in Canada and when he talks, people listen!

His deep, rich voice stands out in a crowd, but I learned that he nurtures and trains his voice and he challenged us to do the same.

You can listen to our March 15, 2013 CJOB radio interview here as  a podcast: http://www.cjob.com/Shows/Episodes.aspx?PID=2553

Knowing me, you can imagine how excited I was when Nabil told me that licorice was good for your voice – excuse me a moment while I go and get some!

I’m back, but now it is stuck in my teeth – hold on.

I’m back, of course keeping your voice hydrated is paramount too (haha) but I’m assuming alcohol doesn’t count as hydration, people.

Anyway…Nabil firmly believes that connecting your inner voice to your outer voice is a skill that will help in many areas of your life.  If we can learn to harness our vocal power so that we are displaying the intention, emotion and energy that we really want to convey, imagine how much more effective and purposeful our conversations will be.

Think about asking for a raise, standing up for yourself or delivering a tough message.  Does your outer voice match the message your inner voice wants to convey?  Are you presenting it in an appropriate and believable manner?

Improving your communication style as Nabil’s tagline, ‘Communicating at a deeper level: from the voice we hear to the voice we listen to’ suggests bring us to rather unconventional methods  of working towards improving our voice such as:

  1. speaking to music – recite or read something to different types of music, he had me practice on the air to classical, rock and new age – it was a very challenging experiment but I could definitely see where it helps you to play with your voice in a way that makes you stretch
  2. grab a friend (gently) and try this exercise – using only one word (we used ‘chair’) – tell an entire story or have an entire conversation. This was hilarious as you can imagine and it also really hammered home the point that it is much more than the words we use, it is how  we use those words that convey our message
  3. Repeat these words to exercise the tongue, kips, upper palate and facial muscles: na-na-na; yo-yeah, yo-yeah, yo-yeah; mo-me, mo-me, mo-me; dew-doh, dew-doh, dew-doh; me-you-we-you are;  mo-wah-O-wah-o; yes they are a little odd, but hey- if it works, it works!

Good luck in finding your inner and outer voice and making it, and you, strong!
