Qualicum Beach byelection goes Saturday to fill vacant seat at council table

QUALICUM BEACH — Local interest appears to be high on the eve of a byelection in Qualicum Beach.

In a news release the Town’s chief election officer Heather Svensen stated 1,489 ballots were cast during two days of advance voting.

“With over 600 mail ballots returned, and counting, to be processed on General Election Day, we expect Qualicum Beach’s historic high voter turnout to continue,” Svensen said.

A total of 4,600 ballots were cast during the 2018 election.

General voting is Saturday, May 15 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre at 747 Jones St. between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Four candidates are on the ballot: Brian Denbigh, Sarah Duncan, Peter Kent, Anne Skipsey and Jean Young.

The town recommends voting in the late afternoon or evening for those hoping to avoid the popular voting times.

The byelection is being held to fill a position left vacant by Adam Walker, who was elected as the region’s MLA in last fall’s provincial election.

Qualicum Beach council at full strength encompasses a mayor and four councillors.

The next general election day for local governments and school boards province-wide is scheduled for Oct. 15, 2022.
