Active COVID-19 cases across central Island drop

NANAIMO — Island Health reported 50 new COVID-19 cases for the health authority on Wednesday.

It marks a continued decline in the average daily increases for the region over the last week.

Of the new cases, 18 were in the central Island region with 22 confirmed on southern Vancouver Island and 10 in the north.

Central Vancouver Island was the only region in Island Health to see active cases drop Wednesday, falling by 10 to 180. There are 470 cases currently considered active in Island Health.

Across B.C., public health confirmed 1,168 new cases, increasing the active case count to 9,821.

The number of people in hospital again rose, to 397, including 120 people receiving intensive care.

Six additional fatalities were recorded stemming from the virus for a total of 1,521 deaths province-wide.

Vaccination clinics continue to vaccinate senior populations 65 and over with the Pfizer/Biontech and Modera vaccines, with the AstraZeneca product available through select pharmacies for those aged 55-64.

To date, nearly 1.2 million doses of vaccine have been administered with an overwhelming majority being first doses.
