NANAIMO — Four Nanaimo-area organizations or projects were given a helping hand in their fight against racism.

The four $5,000 grants were awarded from the BC Multiculturalism Grants program, which is supporting more than 190 projects.

“Racism is pervasive and it reaches every corner of our province,” Rachna Singh, parliamentary secretary for anti-racism initiatives, said in a release.

“These grants prioritize projects addressing anti-Indigenous, anti-Asian and anti-Black racism. These grants will not only help organizations across the province to address systemic racism, but also provide learning opportunities to foster better understanding and encourage intercultural conversation in B.C. communities.”

The Nanaimo Literacy Association received funding for an upcoming issue of the PLACE magazine, a collection of writings and artwork submitted by BIPOC/LGBT2SQ+ creators, “exploring the relationship they have to the community they live in, the experience of being discriminated against, the effects of colonization and the beauty of resiliency.”

Funding for the Nanaimo Pride Society went toward the Alphabet Soup program, which helps LGBT2SQ+ people between 13 and 24 years old.

A play hosted by the Pacific Coast Stage Company received $5,000 for a play included in the 2021 Nanaimo Fringe Festival, which builds off a workshop about newcomers to Nanaimo.

The Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society received $5,000 earlier to help fund the Anti-Racism Art Festival, which included workshops and a 48-hour film challenge.
