Island Health breaks another COVID-19 record

NANAIMO — The third wave of COVID-19 within Island Health continues to spike.

The health authority confirmed 60 new cases on Thursday, April 1. It’s the highest number of cases yet within Island Health.

The previous record was 59 less than one week before.

There’s currently 392 active cases, up from 266 on Monday, March 26.

Central Vancouver Island is home to 171 of the active cases. The rest are primarily found in south Vancouver Island, which currently has the most active.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Across B.C. a further 832 new COVID-19 cases were discovered.

The number of hospitalizations dropped slightly to below 300 while the number of people receiving intensive care remained around 80.

There were five new fatalities.

The province confirmed 90 new variant cases were found in the last two days, compared to the 320 announced on Tuesday, March 30.

Most are the UK variant.
