Central Island continues drop in active COVID-19 cases, 27 new confirmed for Island Health

NANAIMO — The number of people actively diagnosed and then recovering from COVID-19 continues to drop.

Active cases in the health authority dropped by 21 on Wednesday, to 270. The central Island saw the biggest drop with nine fewer cases, however the area still accounts for 60 per cent of all active cases.

Twenty-seven new cases were confirmed by the health authority from the last 24 hours, including 15 in the central Island region.

Province-wide, 542 new cases of COVID-19 were announced in a joint statement from public health and the BC Government.

The increase is slightly above average for recent weeks and nearly 50 cases more than the rolling seven-day average.

There was a minor change in the number of people in hospital, a slight increase to 246 while the number of people receiving intensive care also rose marginally to 64.

The remainder of the 4,654 active cases province wide are recovering at home.

A further seven people passed away in the last 24 hours from COVID-related causes. Across B.C., 1,372 people have died during the pandemic including 26 within Island Health.

Public health continues to monitor for variants of concern, confirming another 18 on Wednesday for a total of 200. However just 11 remain active with the remainder already fully recovered.

Just over 6,600 vaccines were also administered since the province’s last update on Tuesday, March 2. To date, 289,809 doses were issued including 86,616 second doses.
